Network Activity 2 - BlackSeaScene I

Black Sea SCENE Workshops

Specific objectives:
To establish a Black Sea Scientific Network of leading environmental and socio-economic research institutes, universities and NGO’s from the countries around the Black Sea, that will meet in regular Workshops, together with partners from EU member states:
• To discuss and to tune the content and coherence of the Networking Activities
• To monitor and to evaluate the progress of the Networking Activities
• To discuss and to prepare long term arrangements for sustaining the Black Sea SCENE network and the Black Sea virtual data and information infrastructure
• To stimulate mutual capacity building by exchanging experiences in data management, data quality control and data quality assessment

Activities Black Sea SCENE
The Black Sea SCENE group will meet at least 2 times per year and in total 7 times over the project duration of 3 years. 7 Semi-annual Workshops will be dedicated to discussing, planning, tuning and monitoring the activities of NA3, NA4, NA5 and NA6. In addition 2 extra technical workshops will be organized, dedicated to transfer and training of representatives of regional partners in adopting and applying international and EU data quality control and data management principles, in connection with NA3, NA4 and NA5 :

• Data Quality Control (DQC) and Data Quality Assessment (DQA) Workshop - As part of NA3 the partners have prepared an overview and comparison of existing DQC methods, as applied by partners for environmental data, and DQC practices in EU member states. These results will be discussed at the Workshop with QC experts of Black Sea partners. Background information and further insights on EU practices will be given by the EU member state partners. The Workshop will initiate the process of harmonization of Black Sea partners DQC methods towards EU practices, so that Black Sea partners will use comparable DQC and DQA methods in future data acquisition and processing activities. Furthermore the basis will be made for the methods by which the Quality Control Assessment and Classification (see NA3) on existing Black Sea partner’s data will be executed, in order to reach a Data Quality Label (indication) for these datasets.

• Data Management Workshop -  As part of NA4 the regional partners will work on preparing metadata and improving access and exchange options for the datasets, acquired and managed by their institutes. For this internationally agreed metadata and data exchange formats will be applied. As part of NA5 a Black Sea regional infrastructure for data management and access by internet will be developed by a core team of technical partners. The meta-databases in this infrastructure will be populated with the metadata as collected by the Black Sea partners and connectors to the datasets have to be implemented. In this Data Management Workshop technical experts of Black Sea partners will meet with the NA5 leading partners to get a better understanding of the infrastructure and to discuss and to agree how to achieve a good connection between the Black Sea infrastructure and their local institute’s infrastructure.
