Network Activity 4 - BlackSeaScene I

Harmonization and conversion of partner’s data and information to internationally agreed metadata formats and data exchange formats

Objectives and expected impact:
To adopt and to implement internationally agreed protocols for cataloguing and exchanging Black Sea datasets, by collecting meta data and using XML formats for populating standardized meta-directories, and preparing exchange formats for the data sets, managed by the regional partners.

Description of activities

NA4-1: Preparing overview of partner’s datasets and information (EDMED)
During the first 6 months of the project all Black Sea partners will prepare overviews of the available datasets and information within their institutes as well as a fact sheet on their data management / archive systems.

NA4-2: Preparing overviews of research projects and cruise summary reports by partners (EDMERP and CSR)
Black Sea partners will also prepare entries for their institutes to 2 other important catalogues, that are supported internationally for creating overviews of major research projects (EDMERP) and of scientific expeditions with research vessels (Cruise Summary Reports – CSR).

NA4-3: Collecting and preparing socio-economic data and mapping data for the web portal
A major part of the datasets of partners relate to environmental data. A number of regional partners also manage socio-economic data and mapping data. Partners will bring a collection of these datasets together in order to prepare a representative socio-economic presentation of the Black Sea region on the web portal (see NA5) and to support the production and presentation of a number of socio-economic maps for the region on the web portal.

NA4-4: Preparing entries for the Common Data Index, including availability details, access conditions and data exchange formats
Part of the Black Sea virtual data and information structure (NA5) will be a so-called Common Data Index (CDI meta-database), that will give a highly detailed index to individual datasets, managed by regional partners. The CDI is initiated within the Sea-Search project and has been developed as an ISO-19115 compliant XML format, which supports internet interoperability and follows the principles of INSPIRE. The CDI is prepared for automatic generation from major databases, but can also be used as a primary local meta-database by partners, that not yet have a local database, but rely on a system of data files. In that case the CDI can function on a PC configuration as local index to these data files.
